The excitement on social media is great: is the Styrian border haunted?
Scary alarm at the border with Styria: As if lifted by a ghost hand, a tombstone from the Lafnitz appeared this week. Riverside walkers at Burgenland’s Allhau Market could hardly believe their eyes when they saw the nearly 100-year-old block of marble rising from the water. It commemorates Maria G. and Johann G., who died in 1926 and 1944 respectively: “Rest in peace!” There are also other grave boundaries.
Macabre joke or former cemetery?
There were immediate speculations on social media such as Facebook: was there a cemetery here that sunk in the floods? Is this place haunted? Or did someone allow themselves a macabre joke?
“Please don’t call the police or mountain and wildlife rescue services,” warns one resident, who has an explanation for the horrific discovery: An old cemetery in a neighboring community was abandoned in the 1960s. The discarded headstones were then thrown into the Lafnitz to secure the causeway.
