The whole of Austria has been declared an area with an increased risk of bird flu by the Ministry of Health. More than twenty districts – including the four regions of Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Amstetten, Melk and Scheibbs in Lower Austria – were even classified as areas at significantly increased risk.
Situation serious, appeal from State Council
State Councilor for Animal Welfare Susanne Rosenkranz speaks about four companies that have been affected by bird flu in this country. “Containing bird flu is the order of the day,” she says. The state, AGES and the district administration would work closely together, says the state councilor about the current cases in the Amstetten district and calls on farmers, especially in the Mostviertel, to be particularly attentive and careful: “If there are any deviations, please report them immediately to the authorities!”
The federal army has been on an assistance mission in Biberbach since November 8. “Soldiers from the decontamination group of the NBC defense company from Korneuburg are helping to contain the virus,” the army said.
Extensive disinfection measures
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner was proud of the army’s support and wished all farmers and those affected “a lot of strength in these challenging times”. Following the current outbreak, thousands of animals have died or had to be euthanized due to the disease.
18 soldiers in Biberbach are now preventing further contamination. In a lock, wheel arches and undersides of vehicles and containers in which dead animals were transported are disinfected.
