The Union and SPD factions have agreed on a proposal for early federal elections on February 23. The date has also been coordinated with the Greens.
After intensive discussions, SPD faction leader Rolf Mützenich (65) and CDU faction leader Friedrich Merz (69) have agreed on an election date: the federal elections should take place on February 23.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is expected to ask the Bundestag for a vote of confidence on December 16. The final decision on the election date will then be made by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The Chancellor seems willing to cooperate
Scholz originally wanted to ask for a vote of confidence on January 15 to hold new elections at the end of March. After public pressure, he appeared willing to compromise on Sunday. “For me it is no problem at all that I ask the question of confidence before Christmas, if everyone agrees,” said the German Chancellor about the ARD program “Caren Miosga”. If there is agreement between the parliamentary faction leaders of the SPD and the CDU/CSU – Rolf Mützenich and Friedrich Merz – on this, he will take note of it.
Candidate Chancellor Merz made it clear on Monday that, after the failure of the traffic light government, he is now aiming for early federal elections in February.
