A Russian pediatrician has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison over unproven allegations made by the mother of her seven-year-old patient. The woman baselessly accused the doctor of showing a critical attitude towards Russia during a conversation.
Informing people is on the agenda in Russia – and 68-year-old Nadezhda Buyanova was also targeted by the authorities. This comes after the widow of a soldier killed in Ukraine accused the doctor of calling Russia an “aggressor” and her husband a “legitimate target” during a private conversation.
On Tuesday, a court in Moscow found Bujanova guilty, a journalist from the AFP news agency reported. Bujanova protested her innocence and criticized the trial as ‘absurd’. Her lawyer called it a “harsh and illegal” punishment. No evidence has been presented against his client. Supporters of the pediatrician protested against the guilty verdict during the verdict.
Revenge for the level of treatment?
However, the pediatrician described the 34-year-old as ‘unstable’ and explained that she was unhappy with her son’s medical treatment. The seven-year-old later testified against the pediatrician. However, there was no evidence of the conversation.
“Our profession has always been highly respected. But lately the respect has been disappearing. Attitudes also started to change,” the 68-year-old said in her closing speech. In the past there was a doctor and a patient, nowadays it is more about the ‘service’ and the ‘customer’. “We cannot defend ourselves, explanations are not heard by superiors and conflicts are not resolved,” Bujanova said desperately. The child’s mother has experienced her as a person without principles or morals, who feels only malice.
There is a risk of high prison sentences
Since the start of the Ukraine offensive in February 2022, Russian authorities have arrested more and more people for ‘espionage’, ‘treason’, ‘sabotage’, ‘extremism’ or simply criticizing the military. Very long prison sentences are often imposed.
