According to the World Health Organization (WHO), young people in Europe and beyond are feeling increasing pressure from school. 62 percent of girls and boys aged 15 indicate that they feel pressured by school stress.
The consequences for their health and future prospects could be long-lasting, WHO regional director Hans Kluge warned. “These findings should be a wake-up call for all of us to now improve the conditions in which our young people are growing up.”
Compared to the previous survey of this type in 2018, the researchers found an alarming decline in social support for respondents.
Coordinated action is needed at local, regional and national levels to create more supportive environments, tackle inequalities and strengthen the different systems on which young people depend, according to WHO Europe, which drew on data from the European Union for the 2022 academic year .
These measures should address different gender challenges and provide support, especially to girls at their critical stages of development.
