Krems-Stein wanted to get closer to the Danube with an additional crossing of the national highway. However, the survey among citizens and entrepreneurs ended with a clear ‘no’.
The idyllic old town of Kremser Cadastrale Stein is for many the real gateway to the Wachau. But like many other places, the historic core is closer to the state highway than to the blue river. Plans were therefore drawn up in the municipal council to bring the center closer to the river.
Bring the city closer to the Danube
This should allow for an additional and generously designed crossing of the B 33, including the opening of the flood defense at the central square. Before the excavators could drive up, both residents and local businesses were interviewed. If deployment were less than 30 percent, the city would implement its plans regardless of the outcome, it said.
But the issue was clearly on the minds of those involved: almost 53 percent of voters voted in favor of the project. And the result is clear: more than 70 percent spoke out against opening the Danube.
The mayor’s misunderstanding
Mayor Peter Molnar also takes note of this. Even though he obviously regrets the missed ‘opportunity of the century’: ‘If through traffic with 13,000 vehicles per day deserves more protection than tens of thousands of visitors to the old city, that is beyond my understanding.’
