For unknown reasons, a fire raged in a Spanish retirement home on Friday morning, killing at least ten residents.
According to state broadcaster RTVE, two other people are in critical condition after the fire in Villafranca de Ebro near the city of Zaragoza in northeastern Spain. There were 82 residents in the house at the time of the fire, according to an RTVE reporter. It is unclear how many staff were present. A large contingent of firefighters, police, doctors and psychologists were present.
According to radio station Cadena SER, consideration is now being given to transferring the residents who have been brought to safety to other homes, so that they “can recover from the shock and their relatives can visit them”. The center, which opened in 2008, was originally intended only for retirees. But over time, younger people with mental health problems also began to emerge.
