In Poland, unknown people defaced the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Memorial with paint. It commemorates Jewish resistance fighters who defended themselves against the German occupier in 1943. The Israeli ambassador to Poland therefore assumes “anti-Semitic vandalism”.
“Last night the Warsaw Ghetto Monument was destroyed. This is not the first case of anti-Semitic vandalism here. Only decisive action can stop this,” Ambassador Jacov Livne wrote on the X platform. The Polish authorities must find the perpetrators and hold them accountable.
The police investigated the scene on Friday. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for defacing the stones with red and black paint. The beams on the monument were reminiscent of the colors of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Between 1943 and 1945, its members murdered up to 100,000 members of the Polish minority in what is now Ukraine.

The Polish government condemned the incident, calling it an “act of vandalism”. It is an “attack on history and on the values that bind us as a society,” the Polish Foreign Ministry said on its website. The Minister of the Interior announced an “intensive investigation”.
Almost no one survived the 1943 uprising
The monument in the center of the capital commemorates the Jewish resistance fighters who revolted against the German occupier on April 19, 1943. The uprising was brutally suppressed and the ghetto was burned down. Almost no one survived.
