According to a study by the federal government, there is great potential for the construction of solar energy systems on motorways and national highways in Germany. In total, a maximum of 54 gigawatts of power will be installed along streets, on noise barriers and in parking lots.
The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management said this on Tuesday. A total of 250,000 potentially suitable areas have been registered, AFP news agency reports.
Double use must “always be checked”
When planning the construction and expansion of highways in the future, it should always be considered to what extent the associated areas can be used for photovoltaic systems. As early as 2023, the then and recently collapsed three-party German government coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP had legally prepared for the faster expansion of solar energy systems on the higher road network.
According to the research, the greatest potential lies directly along the highways. The Ministry of Transport now wants to take practical steps with Autobahn GmbH and start setting up a Germany-wide land registry. The research was carried out by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) on behalf of the ministry.
