“Mentally ill” – Iran: New women’s clinic for headscarf rebels

Date:

Iran is adopting new ways to educate what it considers to be ‘disobedient’ women. The rejection of the headscarf is presented as a psychological problem; a new clinic will ‘treat’ women who refuse to cover their hair.

Iranian women’s resistance to strict religious regulations continues despite the regime’s repressive measures. The government likes to explain this protest with psychological problems or bad influence from the West.

Student arrested after protesting underwear
In the sensational case of the student in Tehran who stripped down to her underwear in protest in early November, authorities also spoke of the woman’s “mental health problems.” She was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. A few days after the scandal, pro-government media are now reporting that a separate clinic will be opened for women who do not want to wear a headscarf.

The clinic should therefore be under the supervision of the “Centre for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice”. This institution reports directly to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The clinic’s future director told Iranwire that the clinic focuses on dignity, modesty and chastity.

Clinic teaches ‘to be confident in modest clothing’.
Mehri Talebi Darestani, who is also head of the Women and Family Affairs Department at the Virtue Authority, feared that “scientific and psychological treatments related to the removal of the hijab” would be provided. The goal is to help women “wear modest clothing with confidence.”

The student who was arrested in early November after her underwear protest is now said to be back with her family. According to Iranian media, she was transferred to the care of her relatives after it was determined that she was ‘sick’.
