Before the city of Krems invests a lot of taxpayer money in planning a new event location, the opposition is calling for a citizen investigation. In addition, the modern events center will be located in an old church nave.
The citizen inquiry into the redevelopment of the Danube areas in Stein is still breathing down the neck of city politics in Krems. Although several (enthusiastic) residents were involved in the planning of the project, the referendum ended negatively, the “Krone” reported. This fate should not befall the transformation of the Dominican Church into a modern events center. The ÖVP therefore wants to survey citizens as early as possible.
“The residents of Krems must decide for themselves whether they want lavish balls and pop concerts in the church,” vice mayor Florian Kamleitner summarizes. “The planned use of our Dominican church as an event venue for up to 1,000 visitors would further aggravate the already tense parking situation and traffic in the old town,” warns ÖVP city councilor Eva-Maria Hochstöger. Moreover, there would inevitably be noise pollution for local residents. And: “The acoustic conditions in the church are not suitable for concerts,” she says.
“Fast and legally binding”
The Dominican Church is not only located in the city center, but is also owned by the city through a real estate company. “Before a lot of money is spent on planning, residents should be asked whether they want that at all,” says Kamleitner, who calls on SPÖ Mayor Peter Molnar to conduct a quick and legally binding citizen survey.
The church is currently used for small events, but mainly for exhibitions with ‘bearable’ visitor numbers. The venerable building also houses the Krems City Museum, the cultural office, the library and the city archives. The legal quiet time of 10 p.m. applies on the square in front of it.
