Seventh eruption – Iceland: volcano spews lava again – village evacuated

Date:

Another volcanic eruption took place on Thursday evening on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, popular among tourists. The eruption occurred at the Sundhnuksgigar volcanic fissure (pictured above) near the town of Grindavík, the Icelandic Meteorological Service IMO said.

Live footage showed lava bubbling from a long fissure at the eruption site. This is the seventh volcanic eruption since December 2023. Currently no infrastructure is threatened by the eruption, but the small fishing village of Grindavík is being evacuated, IMO expert Benedikt Ofeigsson told public radio RAS3.

Eruption smaller than that of late August
The current eruption is smaller than the last one that occurred at the end of August, the IMO weather service said. “The outflow is lower and the lava does not flow as fast,” says Ofeigsson.

Last year, most of Grindavík’s 4,000 residents had already been evacuated. Since then, almost all local houses have been sold to the state and almost all residents have left the city. “About fifty houses were occupied in recent nights,” the civil defense said.

Seismic activity has been increasing for years
There has been increased seismic activity in the region for years. Iceland is home to a total of 33 active volcanic systems.
