Gas cartridges in the fire – Multiple explosions during a fire in a garden house

Date:

Dramatic night for the residents of an apartment complex in Wiener Neustadt. When an adjacent garden shed caught fire, they had to be evacuated from their apartments. The fire also ‘exploded’ several times.

“Fire in the hut, multiple explosions!” This dramatic incident report reached the fire brigade in Wiener Neustadt on Sunday evening. The seriousness of the situation became clear on the spot: when the fire brigade arrived, the garden shed on Daimlergasse was already completely on fire and the flames threatened to spread to a vehicle parked nearby and to the adjacent apartment complex.

Attempts are being made to extinguish the fire with a garden hose
Passers-by had already smashed the car’s side window to push it out of the danger zone. Meanwhile, residents tried to control the fire with a garden hose. But in vain: the Flames flared up meters high.

Gas cartridges torn
Just as the first Florianis respiratory protection teams started extinguishing the fire, a loud bang sounded at the source of the fire. Several more followed. It turned out that the heat had ruptured some gas cartridges and aerosol cans stored in the cabin. The emergency services then had to act particularly carefully.

Thick smoke in apartments
Due to the heavy smoke, apartments in the adjacent building quickly filled with smoke. The fire brigade brought the affected residents to safety. The facade of the house also had to be opened with a rescue saw to prevent the fire from spreading via embers. Windows and the battery of a photovoltaic system were also damaged by the intense heat.

The cause of the fire is still unclear
26 firefighters battled the dramatic fire in the garden shed for almost two hours. Police and rescue workers were also on the scene. Why the fire broke out in the garden shed at night remains to be clarified.
