Excitement in Israel – Jewish settlers attack high-ranking officers

Date:

A group of settlers chased Major General Avi Bluth and other officers in Hebron on Friday and blocked the road. According to the army, Bluth was denigrated as a traitor. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now came out and sharply criticized the radical group.

“Any violence against officers and soldiers must be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” his office said on Sunday. Police said dozens of settlers, some of whom were masked, threw rocks at soldiers and border police near the West Bank settlement of Itamar on Saturday.

Some settler youth groups reject the Israeli military’s jurisdiction in areas they consider under their control. However, top settler representatives have repeatedly demanded that violence have no place in their movement.

Violence is the order of the day
Palestinians in the West Bank have been repeatedly attacked by settlers. They demand the annexation of the area by Israel. The Israeli army is also expected to protect Palestinians from attacks by militant settlers. Major General Bluth admitted in August that the army had failed to protect the population when settlers attacked a Palestinian-inhabited town. Palestinians have repeatedly said they are often targeted by settler attacks. The Israeli soldiers would do little or nothing to protect them.

Most countries consider Jewish settlements built on Palestinian land that Israel captured in the 1967 war to be illegal. Israel denies this, citing historical and Biblical ties to the country. The Palestinians see the West Bank as part of a future independent state. The Europeans and the US are also calling for a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.
