Last year, 85,000 women and girls were deliberately murdered worldwide, meaning one woman was killed every ten minutes. 60 percent of these crimes were committed by intimate partners or other family members.
- According to the ‘Femicides in 2023’ report, Africa recorded the highest rates of femicides of intimate partners and families, followed by the Americas and Oceania.
- In Europe and America, most women murdered at home (64 percent and 58 percent respectively) were the victims of intimate partners, while elsewhere family members were the main perpetrators.
The report underlines the urgent need for a strong criminal justice system that holds perpetrators accountable while ensuring adequate support for survivors, said Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC (UN Office on Drugs and Crime).
