It is said to be the first Nazi street to be renamed. But not every resident of Heinrich-Damisch-Straße is happy with the change of address. Some feel insulted, some even uprooted.
The small Heinrich-Damisch-Straße in Salzburg-Parsch will become Helene-Thimig-Straße in 2025. Mayor Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ) will sign the official report today. Damisch was an early NSDAP member and anti-Semite. While renaming city streets that were contaminated by the Nazis was previously taboo, the matter is now finally moving – the ‘Krone’ reports. The street with only eight addresses is intended as a pilot project.
Not everyone likes a new name for their home address. “I feel very surprised,” explains resident Gerald Jarosch. He only heard about the name change from “Krone”. “Why doesn’t the city inform us personally in advance? That irritates me.”
Jarosch has lived here for more than 40 years. His business is also affected. He has to have everything changed, from the stamp to the car lettering. The municipality will cover the costs incurred by residents as a result of the name change. “But who will replace the time I spend calling and calling?”
“That gives me a headache.”
“For me, the change amounts to uprooting,” complains Jarosch’s mother-in-law Sylvia Krögner. Her neighbor, 97-year-old Ruth Krahmer, sees the same thing. Both women have lived here in Parsch since the early 1960s. The determined Krahmer, whose age is not apparent, rejects the renaming of her street.
“I have been through and experienced a lot in my life. That too now,” complains the pensioner, who is dependent on help in daily life. Who arranges the official procedures and changes the address? “That gives me a headache.”
