Incredible scenes took place at a new high school in Tyrol! A student announced a shooting attack against several classmates. The police were alerted. When questioned, the boy admitted to making the statements and insisted that it was all just for fun!
“When my daughter came home from school last week, she said excitedly: ‘Dad, you won’t believe what happened to us today,'” says the father (name known to the editors) in an interview with the ‘Krone’. And then she unpacked explosive details: A video circulated on Snapchat showing a student (name known to the editors) with a gun who allegedly announced a shooting attack – with the words: “I’ll kill you all!”
“Lessons continued – with police in the classrooms”
Police officers came to the new high school. “Classes continued and according to my daughter, there were police officers in the classrooms – behind the students. “That worried the children even more,” the father says in disbelief, “the school did not think it was necessary to expel the boy. I don’t know any punishment either. Don’t we have enough examples in other countries showing the drama that such announcements can end in? You have to let it all melt in your mouth first, it’s crazy.”
Since then, his daughter has been afraid to go to school every day. “I am also afraid that something could happen to her and that the student will still carry out his threat. “It’s certainly not a bad idea,” the father emphasizes.
“Everything is swept under the table”
Why this incident has not yet been made public is a mystery to the concerned father: “Everything is always swept under the table instead of informing the population. This silence causes me a crisis, my collar is slowly bursting. This incident needs attention.”
At least there was an official statement from the school management via email. “But everything is played down and trivialized – for example, there is no mention of the video at all,” the father of the family points out.
“No intention behind statements that are meant to be nice”
The “Krone” has this email, which states: “Yesterday during the long break and in the afternoon during gymnastics class, the student announced to several classmates that a shooting would take place at school today. The police searches of the student’s apartment and on his mobile phone yielded no concrete clues.”
The letter also shows that the boy has made a confession: “When interrogated by the police at our school, the student confessed in the presence of his parents that there was no intention behind his statements, which were intended as a joke. The police and we also assume that there is no concrete risk of an attack, but I would still ask for caution and vigilance.”
Information discussion in all classes
“I tried to allay the justified fears of many children by holding information sessions in all classes.” The students “received all the information and were able to express questions and concerns,” the school management emphasizes. The topics of moral courage and misconduct were also discussed together and the importance of not relying on rumors and fantasy stories was discussed.
“The student was probably not aware of the consequences”
And further: “Every child will deal with this incident differently. Talk to your children about this topic as a family. We want to make a good daily school life possible for everyone again. The student was probably unaware of the far-reaching consequences that ‘misconduct for fun’ can have. With this information I not only want to alleviate your concerns about your children, but also avoid half-truths and false reports.”
Directorate of Education: “The student is otherwise inconspicuous”
The “Krone” confronted the Tyrol Education Directorate with this incident. “Discussions with the school management showed that the 13-year-old was actually not at school on the day he announced the incident,” emphasizes the Tyrol education directorate.
Because the police concluded after questioning the student that he posed no danger, “and because he was otherwise an inconspicuous student”, the school management did not consider requesting a suspension from the education board. “However, the management has informed the responsible school quality manager who was present at the school,” the Directorate of Education said.
Clarification and apology in class
The 13-year-old has been back at school since Monday this week. “Immediately after his arrival, the school management had a conversation with him. Afterwards he made it clear to the class that his announcement was meant to be ‘fun’ and he apologized.”
The school board invites the student’s parents to take up the offer of school psychology to clarify the matter. “A date has already been agreed,” says Tyrol’s education directorate. School psychology will also discuss the situation with the classes.
The police will forward the report to the Public Prosecution Service
And what does the Tyrolean police say about this? “We can confirm the incident,” police spokesman Stefan Eder told “Krone”. A report will now be forwarded to the public prosecutor, who will then assess the facts. Due to language barriers, an interpreter was also present during the study. “The police took the matter very seriously and treated it sensitively because of the student’s age,” Eder emphasizes.
