Passengers on a luxury cruise ship went on hunger strike while traveling through Antarctica. Previously, the captain decided to change the planned route and shorten the passage along the Antarctic Peninsula. The compensation offered is not enough for the guests.
They demand that the full travel costs of up to 10,000 pounds (corresponding to 12,000 euros) be reimbursed. However, the company has offered a 50 percent refund or alternatively a 65 percent discount on a future cruise. It was emphasized that this is well above the legal requirement of approximately 30 percent.
Engine failure
What had happened? During the three-week cruise from the South African city of Cape Town to Ushuaia in southern Argentina, a malfunction occurred in one of the two electric propulsion engines of the ‘SH Diana’. The captain therefore decided to change the planned route and shorten the crossing of three and a half days.

This does not go down well with some passengers who complain that they missed the “trip of a lifetime”. A Russian group went on hunger strike with handwritten signs demanding reimbursement of the full cost of the trip. The provider Swan Hellenic said some are trying to put pressure on crew members.

In total there are approximately 170 passengers on board. Some of them have already accepted the compensation, it is said. The initial discomfort has largely disappeared. The hunger strike was counterproductive, Swan Hellenic said.
The ship will arrive in Ushuia tomorrow, Saturday. Technicians board there to repair the “SH Diana” in time for the next voyage.
