A hunting dog in the Neusiedl am See district contracted the fatal infection while hunting wild boar and tragically died. Now people are warning about the danger.
A dramatic incident in Seewinkel raises the alarm. During the search, as they say in hunting jargon, a district dog tracked down a shot wild boar a few days ago. A hunter’s four-legged friend may have become infected with the virus called Aujeszky’s disease.
Death comes quickly
“Typical signs of infection in dogs are itching, restlessness, fever and paralysis. In addition, there is usually unusual behavior that the animal suddenly shows. Unfortunately, the disease leads to death very quickly,” explains State Dog Officer Wolfgang Lang.
According to the experts, if there is a concrete suspicion after contact with a wild boar or when the first symptoms of disease appear, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately. In the current case of the hunting dog, it was definitively proven in the laboratory that Aujeszky’s disease was the cause of death.
The district hunting club Neusiedl am See now advises increased caution. Regular checks and preventive safety measures during stalking are essential to minimize the risk of infection.
People are not in danger
“Dogs, cats and virtually all other pets can be affected by Aujeszky’s disease. The infection is fatal in all susceptible animal species, only pigs survive,” a veterinarian explains.
The symptoms are similar to those of rabies, which is why the disease is often called ‘pseudo-rage’. “According to current knowledge, people are not susceptible to the infection,” it emphasizes. The animal disease occurs worldwide. In Austria, the domestic pig population is not affected, but wild boars are.
