Marine Le Pen’s New Popular Front and far-right have filed motions of censure against the French government after resorting to the constitutional mechanism and skipping the vote in parliament on approving the 2025 social security budgets.
After barely three months in power, the French Prime Minister decided Michel Barnieris facing two motions of censure this week that could lead the French country to a new political blockade.
He New Popular Front and the extreme right of Marine Le Pen have filed motions of censure against the French government after resorting to the constitutional mechanism and skipping Parliament’s vote on the approval of the 2025 social security budgets.
The vote on the censure motions is expected to take place on Wednesday in the afternoon, although it could also take place on Thursday in the morning, depending on what the parliamentary forces agree to. The proposal on the left, presented earlier, would be discussed first.
The leader of the extreme right Marine Le Penwhose 140 deputies are fundamental to the survival of the right-wing executive, announced on Monday that his group will table its own motion of censure, but that they are also prepared to vote for the motion he announced left.
Barnier has only 211 delegates in a General Assembly of 577which makes his resignation almost certain in the motion of censure, which in France is not constructive, but simply overthrows the government. It will be Macron, who is on a state visit to Saudi Arabia until Wednesday, who will have to appoint a new executive.
With that position, Barnier’s Executive hours are… named last September 5have been counted, but Le Pen has downplayed the seriousness of the matter: “Last year’s budgets will be applied, there will be a new prime minister and he will adopt a new budget.”
“The French have no reason to be afraid. “The only thing they should fear is the country’s high deficit and the rise in unemployment due to the policies of the past seven years,” he said.
Postpone pension increases and stop subsidizing medicines
Le Pen has accused Barnier of wanting to follow Macron’s policies and has minimized the concessions the prime minister has made to them in budget negotiations in recent days.
Moreover, he has criticized the fact that he did not agree with the last of them, namely giving up on postponing the increase in pensions in 2025 by half a year to accommodate inflation in 2024.
He has assured that it is his duty to “defend the French” against the measures of the executive and believes that Barnier has not taken into account his proposals on “austerities and new revenues”.
As for the decision not to stop subsidizing certain medicines, which Barnier adopted this morning, Le Pen has indicated that it amounts to barely 500 million euros.
