Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) was stunned by Russia’s renewed attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Sunday. Against the “Krone”, he sharply criticized Moscow for “this barbaric way of waging war”. Most of the attacks in the city center hit civilian targets.
Kiev was rocked by several explosions on Sunday morning. They happened in the central district of Shevchenko, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said via SMS service Telegram. Paramedics and rescue workers were sent to the scene. The historic district in the center of Kiev is home to a number of universities, restaurants and art galleries.
The residents of two buildings had to be rescued and taken to safety, according to Klitschko. Local news agency Ukrinform said the explosions could be heard as the sirens of the air raids sounded. According to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, Russian forces have used various types of missiles to attack targets in western and southern Ukraine. It is unknown if there were any injuries or deaths.
Nehammer condemns ‘barbaric warfare’
Chancellor Nehammer reacted with dismay at the images of the Kiev mayor’s office (see video above), which had been checked by the intelligence services and confirmed as authentic: “These brutal rocket attacks on civilians, on apartment buildings with women and children are unbearable. “I cannot understand how such crimes can be committed. The Russian Federation is responsible for this barbaric way of waging war.”
At least three killed in rocket attacks on Sarny
On Saturday, there had already been a rocket attack on the western Ukrainian city of Sarny, in which at least three people were killed, according to authorities. According to Russian information, the evacuation of a chemical plant in Sievjerodonetsk has been suspended due to Ukrainian attacks. Russia had previously announced the capture of Sievjerodonetsk.
According to the Russian news agency Tass, the Ukrainian side fired shots at the Asot chemical plant, preventing the evacuation of the people inside. The agency referred to the local police.
According to a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, even after Ukrainian forces withdrew from Sievjerodonetsk, there were still special units in the city directing artillery fire on Russian troops.
Zelenskyy: ‘Sanctions are not enough’
According to Zelenskyy, his country was hit by 45 Russian missiles within half a day on Saturday. “They are further confirmation of our position that sanctions against Russia are not enough.” His country needs more military aid.
Ukraine is in a morally and emotionally difficult phase of the war. “We understand that we can still protect the state,” said the head of state. However, he does not know how great the losses and efforts will be until victory lies ahead.
Press but don’t forget
Selenskyj wants to recapture the cities occupied by Russia. In his video speech on Saturday evening, he referred to Sievjerodonetsk, Donetsk and Lugansk. Melitopol and Mariupol are not forgotten either. “All other temporarily occupied cities in Ukraine will be Ukrainian,” he said.
