Two electric vehicles crashed together on the southern highway near Wiener Neudorf, Mödling district. The driver had to be rescued from the wreckage by rescuers. However, certain safety measures had to be taken.
On Tuesday evening, an electric SUV crashed into the back of an electric van near the entrance to the Wiener Neudorf highway. While the truck driver survived the collision unscathed, the driver of the car was seriously injured in the collision.
Increased risk due to electric drive
To allow rescuers access to the accident victim, firefighters had to open the passenger door of the wreckage using a hydraulic rescue device. However, it had to be checked beforehand whether the high-voltage battery of the electric vehicle was damaged and whether it had activated the automatic switch-off of the electric drive.
Safety features worked
“Fortunately, the vehicle’s safety features worked properly, so that there was no additional danger to the accident victim and the emergency services during the rescue operation,” said operations manager and fire chief Walter Wistermayer.
Accident victim recovered from wreckage
The injured driver was rescued from the badly damaged car with the help of a backboard. This board is a special rescue board used when spinal injuries in accident victims cannot be ruled out. After the injured had been treated, the destroyed car was removed by the fire brigade and the emergency services escorted the damaged but roadworthy electric truck to the nearest breakdown area.
