Despite winter conditions at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, a Dutch hiking group, whose members were between 61 and 65 years old, wanted to hike along a marked hiking trail from the Wiesbadner Hütte over the 2,737-metre-high Litzner saddle to the Saarbrückehütte in Gaschurn on Wednesday afternoon. For a 61-year-old this was fatal.
At the Klostertaler environmental hut, a hiker experienced symptoms of exhaustion. Despite a break, the 61-year-old had to admit defeat to persistent exhaustion, and therefore sat down where she was.
Another hiker tried to catch up with an earlier hiker from the group and made sure that an emergency call was made to save the exhausted woman. The rescue helicopter Gallus 1 searched the described area without success in search of the 61-year-old Dutch woman.
However, because the woman could not be found at the indicated location, a search was launched by the Gaschurn mountain rescue service and the Libelle police helicopter.
At around 19:05, the woman was finally found unharmed near the Klostertal/Ochsental junction and rescued by the Libelle police helicopter, which flew her to Bielerhöhe. Police investigations revealed that the hiker had seen the rescue helicopter flying over, but had misjudged it. For this reason, the Dutch woman descended further towards the Silvretta reservoir.
