Hatred and insults – Merkel book cannot be reviewed on Amazon

Date:

On 736 pages, Angela Merkel reflects on her life in her memoirs. This arouses interest: the former Chancellor set a record in the first week of sales. But for a short time you were no longer allowed to review the work – at least at the shipping giant Amazon…

The former German chancellor recently published her memoirs. Many people apparently find this very interesting, because ‘Freedom’ turned out to be a bestseller.

In the first week of sales, the 70-year-old set a sales record with her autobiography, despite the hefty price of 42 euros. The first edition is already sold out.

The blurb says: “Angela Merkel was responsible for Germany for sixteen years, led the country through countless crises and shaped German and international politics and society with her actions and attitude. But of course Angela Merkel was not born a chancellor. In her memoirs, written together with her old political advisor Beate Baumann, she looks back on her life in two German states: 35 years in the GDR, 35 years in the reunified Germany.

Political life began with the fall of the Berlin Wall
And further: “She talks more personally than ever before about her childhood, youth and her studies in the GDR and the dramatic year 1989, in which the wall fell and her political life began. She brings us into her meetings and conversations with the world’s most powerful and uses key national, European and international turning points to clearly and precisely illustrate how decisions were made (…) a decisive plea for freedom.”

“Self-congratulation instead of critical reflection”
The book is already in second place on the Amazon bestseller list. However, only 160 customer reviews of the work have been officially released. The reviews of the 736-page tome: mixed. You can read about ‘Self-congratulation instead of critical reflection’ or ‘The banality of mothers: our downfall’.

But many reviews may have been much more offensive, as Amazon deactivated the review option at short notice. The suspicion: many people would not have read the work at all and would only have expressed their displeasure, bitterness and anger. No less than 31 percent of the reviews consist of ‘one star’; zero stars cannot be awarded.

Amazon’s product page simply stated: “Unfortunately, we cannot accept reviews of this item.” The blocking was justified by “unusual review activity”, but without going into further detail, according to “n-tv”.
