The police offensive will probably have an effect. Since 2022, both registrations and admissions have increased by 80 percent, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) said on Friday. While 6,500 people registered two years ago, this year there were 11,500.
“Like all employers, our goal is to understand and win over Generation Z and Generation Alpha,” said the department head. Karner attributes the increase to a “mix of measures”.
More options, fewer rules
This year, 2,600 people were admitted to basic training – in 2022 that number would increase to 1,450. During the training there is now a higher salary, a climate voucher and the opportunity to obtain a driving license. In addition, the rules for visible tattoos have been relaxed, which no longer has to be an exclusion criterion. In addition, young police officers should also be recruited through social media campaigns.
There is a need for catching up in Vienna and in the countryside
The Minister of the Interior explained that there was a need to catch up in terms of personnel, especially in Vienna and Vorarlberg, and therefore additional recruitment measures were needed there. Nevertheless, a positive balance was recorded for the capital. In 2022, there were 350 Viennese police students, and there are now 845. Previously, two job application agencies were established in Vienna, with recruitment teams sent to schools.
Modern equipment and protective measures should also make the police profession more attractive. Franz Ruf, general director of public security, emphasized the emphasis “on technical equipment, on prevention work, on IT investigations and IT forensics.” There will be a total of nine cybercrime training centers in Austria in the future.
Michael Takacs, director of the federal police, announced that there should be new patrol vehicles in all departments within the next three years. Modern shock and stab protection has also been purchased for law enforcement officers.
