European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has spoken out against a boycott of the G20 summit in the fall, even if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends the next meeting. “We have to think very carefully whether we paralyze the entire G20, I am not advocating it,” von der Leyen told the ZDF “heute journal” on Sunday evening. The next G20 summit will take place in mid-November on the Indonesian island of Bali.
“In my opinion, the G20 is too important, also for the developing countries, the emerging countries, to let Putin destroy this body again.” The interview took place on the sidelines of the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in Bavaria.
Putin’s participation possible
The next summit of the top 20 industrialized and emerging countries will take place in mid-November on the Indonesian island of Bali. The group also includes Russia, so Putin’s participation is possible. It is important to “tell Putin to his face what we think of him and what we think of this kind of action,” von der Leyen said, referring to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
“One thing is very clear: there will be no ‘business as usual’, ie no normality.”
