Following the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, activists search for political prisoners in a notorious detention center. Rebels claim to have already freed hundreds of prisoners, including women and children, from underground cells. But many people are still stuck in the cruel ‘red cells’.
Members of the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, carried out systematic operations in the infamous Saidnaya military prison north of Damascus, as the chief writes on Platform X.
Search for secret cells in the basement
Civil defense specialists used dogs and sound sensors to search for secret cells in the prison’s basement. “We are accompanied by people who know all the details of the prison,” wrote Raid Al Saleh, head of the White Helmets. However, the search has so far been without success. The work will continue, Al Saleh wrote.
When Islamist rebels came to power in Syria, scores of people imprisoned under President Bashar al-Assad were released. Saidnaya, one of many infamous prisons, became known among Syrians as the ‘slaughterhouse’ because of the brutality of its guards.
Thousands of people were probably executed in the “slaughterhouse”.
A 2017 Amnesty International report stated that thousands of people have been killed in mass executions in Saidnaya since the start of the Syrian civil war.
In addition, prisoners were tortured, with the prisoners being mainly opposition citizens.
