Nobel laureates unite against Kennedy

Date:

More than 75 Nobel laureates have spoken out against Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the future U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. They accuse the chosen candidate of the new President Donald Trump of not having sufficient qualifications and of taking anti-scientific positions.

Kennedy should not be confirmed by the Senate and entrusted with leadership of the ministry, according to a letter from the scientists published by the New York Times.

The letter was initiated, among others, by the British-American biochemist and molecular biologist Richard Roberts, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1993.

The signatories question Kennedy’s fitness for office and criticize his lack of qualifications or experience in fields such as medicine, science and administration. They accuse him of representing anti-scientific views.

If he comes to power, it would endanger the health care system and weaken the US’s leading role in research, the letter said. Kennedy has distinguished himself in the past as an opponent of life-saving vaccines, he spreads conspiracy theories and is a sharp critic of the authorities that will be subordinate to him in the future – such as the US Food and Drug Administration.

High-level conspiracy theories in the future?
Kennedy participated in the presidential elections as an independent candidate, but then withdrew his hopeless candidacy and switched to the Trump camp. The 70-year-old comes from the prominent Kennedy family. He was a Democrat for decades, but increasingly distanced himself from the party. He is criticized for spreading conspiracy theories and contacts with right-wing extremist politicians.

Kennedy Jr. is an outspoken opponent of vaccination. Trump said he would end “the epidemic of chronic disease” and make America healthy again. The person must still be confirmed by the Senate.
