Half of Linz’s city center was in a state of emergency on Tuesday afternoon. A fire broke out in the basement of the Sisters of Mercy Hospital and emergency services closed the access roads. The hospital itself referred acute patients to two other clinics.
There were blue lights everywhere and nothing happening in traffic – this was the scene that emerged in the center of Linz late on Tuesday afternoon. The reason: a smoldering fire broke out during construction in the basement of the Sisters of Mercy Hospital.
Streets closed
The emergency services then closed the access roads to the hospital in the city center. An evacuation of the hospital was not necessary.
Acute patients are diverted
However, the smoldering fire still affected the hospital operations of the ‘sisters’, who were admitted on Tuesday. “We have referred our acute patients to Kepler University Hospital and Elisabethinen Hospital,” the hospital said in response to a “Krone” request.
According to information from the order hospital, there were no injuries and the fire was probably extinguished fairly quickly. The fire was noticed around 3:30 PM due to heavy smoke.
