Crashed into a tree – deer in the road: 19 year old dies

Accident drama Wednesday in Lower Austria on the L 144 in the municipality of Wiesmath: Because there was a deer on the road, a 17-year-old driver slipped and crashed into a tree. His passenger (19) was fatally injured.

According to the police, the 17-year-old driver from the Wiener Neustadt district pulled over the car around 6:10 PM because of a deer on the L 144 in the municipality of Wiesmath (Wiener Neustadt-Land district) at road kilometer 20.6.

Driver in hospital with serious injuries
The car skidded and crashed into a tree. The 19-year-old passenger from the Wiener Neustadt district was fatally injured. In addition, the driver had to be taken by ambulance to the Wiener Neustadt State Hospital due to serious injuries. The L 144 was closed to all traffic in the vicinity of the accident location until 8:30 p.m.

317 injured in wildlife accidents
Last year, approximately 73,000 accidents involving wild animals occurred in Austria, which corresponds to approximately 8 accidents per hour. Deer (55%) and hares (26%) were most often involved in collisions. The state of Lower Austria was particularly affected, where 39% of all wild animal accidents were recorded. These accidents injured an average of 317 people per year, with 47% of the accidents taking place in the dark.

The statistics emphasize the importance of caution and attentive driving, especially in rural areas and at times when visibility is limited.
