A missing staircase in a Viennese municipal building caused confusion. The tenants received support from the FPÖ. But only a ‘Krone’ investigation brought clarity.
A strange story has been unfolding in the community building at Peter-Jordan-Straße 81-91 in Währing in recent months. Already in the summer, residents noticed that a staircase connecting two parts of the building had simply disappeared.
A construction fence was placed in their place, which initially caused some mystery. What happened to the stairs? Several residents contacted Wiener Wohnen, but all received different information. Sometimes it was said that a construction company had gone bankrupt, sometimes the foreman who should know was referred – but there was no solution to the problem.
Wrong information given
Tenant Erich B. was in turn referred to a construction company that carries out such work in municipal buildings. When the 48-year-old called, he was told that they had not worked with Wiener Wohnen for a long time.
The case dragged on for months while the stairs remained unusable. “A few tenants tried to use the stairs, but that is of course extremely dangerous,” reports B. He and his neighbors were annoyed by their landlord’s passivity and disinterest. Desperate, they first turned to the FPÖ, which assured them of support.
Wiener Wohnen finally clarifies the situation
But it was only after the tenants contacted the “Krone” that things started to move. A question answer from Wiener Wohnen solved the mystery: “Fortunately the stairs were not stolen,” a spokeswoman explains. Instead, the steps of the stairs were battered and therefore needed to be replaced to allow safe use. “Some of the work has already been done, the rest will depend on the weather. We aim to complete the work as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said.
However, there are external factors – such as the drying times of the concrete – over which we unfortunately have no influence. “If the weather permits, the new steps will be installed before Christmas, otherwise in January 2025,” it is emphasized. It should also be noted that tenants can reach the courtyard side via one of the other stairs from the street side until completion.
The mystery of the “stolen” stairs has now been solved. An early Christmas present for those affected.
