Brazilian head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has undergone a second operation after a brain haemorrhage. According to his treating doctors, Lula is lucid and speaks normally.
The 79-year-old had to undergo emergency surgery on Tuesday to stop bleeding in the brain. The operations are related to the fall of the president at home, which took place in October.
A drain was removed from the head of state’s skull on Thursday. There were no complications, wrote the doctors at Sirio Lebanes Hospital in Sao Paulo.
The president’s health had raised doubts about whether he would run for re-election in 2026. Lula’s spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that the 79-year-old would also be a candidate in the next elections. He is expected to be released from hospital early next week and may then resume presidential activities, his personal doctor Roberto Kalil Filho told reporters. Lula is currently represented by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin.
