Balenciaga staff held a press conference in Zumaia this morning in which they reported that the Basque Government, Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, Zumaia Municipal Council and Balenciaga management They have accepted the committee’s proposal to form “a joint table” to find solutions that guarantee the future of the company.
Last week, the workers summoned all these institutions and also the Spanish government – through the Ministry of Economy, Cofides or the government delegation – but this Friday they explained that they have not received a response from any representative of the executive power.
For this reason, the commission has shown its “outrage” at the government of Spain, which is a “fundamental part of the rescue of the company” and employment.
To demand the participation of the Spanish government in this working group, the committee will hold a concentration protesting at the government sub-delegation in San Sebastián next Wednesday, December 18.
They also announced that they have a round of contacts with political parties to obtain their support, and will also request intervention before the Industry Committee of the Basque Parliament.
The shipyard was forced to file for bankruptcy proceedings after the Spanish Development Finance Company (Cofides) rejected the restructuring plan it sought to avoid. The shipyard’s employees explained that the bankruptcy proceedings are pending approval by the Commercial Court.
