North Korean soldiers reportedly opened fire on their Russian colleagues in Kursk after a fatal mix-up, Ukrainian Military Intelligence (HUR) reports. Accordingly, eight mercenaries from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s Akhmat Battalion, which was also an ally of the Russians, were killed.
According to HUR, the reason for the fatal ‘friendly fire’ was the language barrier between North Koreans and Russians. A resulting confusion resulted in the North Koreans firing on several members of the Akhmat unit. Eight soldiers from Vladimir Putin’s army were killed.
Heavy losses for Russia and its allies
The incident is said to have taken place on Saturday. According to information from Kiev, about 200 soldiers fighting for Russia died that day alone in Kursk, Russia, which the Ukrainians had invaded as part of a counteroffensive and have since partially occupied.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier stated in his evening video address that numerous soldiers from North Korea were apparently fighting in the Kursk region and suffered “significant” losses. He did not provide specific figures.
North Koreans have been deployed against Ukraine for months
Rumors that North Korea was supporting Russia with soldiers in the war against Ukraine first emerged in October, and the battle against the Ukrainian army is said to have taken place for the first time in November. Zelensky fears that the North Koreans will also be in other sectors of the front.
Most Russian drones have been shot down
In Ukraine itself, another Russian drone attack was largely repulsed on Sunday night. Air defenses destroyed 56 of 108 Russian drones, the Ukrainian military said. Another 49 drones disappeared from radar and were probably intercepted by electronic air defenses. However, debris from destroyed drones damaged an unspecified infrastructure facility, as well as residential buildings and houses.
