Shortly before the end of the rape trial in the south of France, the main suspect spoke to his family again. Dominique Pelicot said in his closing speech in court that he had asked his ex-wife Gisèle and the rest of his family for forgiveness for his despicable actions.
The 72-year-old had admitted during the trial that he had repeatedly drugged his then partner for almost a decade, abused her and offered rape to strangers.
Now the rapist explained in court: “I would first like to pay tribute to my wife’s courage.” He asked his wife and his entire family to accept his apology.
More than fifty men in court
Gisèle Pelicot believes she has been raped about 200 times. In addition to Dominique Pelicot, 50 more men are on trial in Avignon. Almost all of them are accused of rape. Investigators believe a dozen other men attacked Gisèle Pelicot. However, they could not be identified. Pelicot’s ex-husband took hundreds of photos and videos of the actions.
The gigantic trial comes to an end with the last words of the suspects. The verdict is expected on Thursday. While the Public Prosecution Service demanded twenty years in prison for Dominique Pelicot and between four and eighteen years in prison for the other defendants, more than half of the suspects demanded acquittal.
