Rocket boxes with impressive names such as ‘Mafiozo’, ‘Mustang’ or ‘Brutus’ – entire arsenals of prohibited fireworks of the F3 and F4 classes were fished out of the cases on Sunday by freezing police officers during a multi-hour inspection at the storm-thrown and half snowy Weigetschlag border crossing (Upper Austria). But the fun is dangerous. And if you are caught as a smuggler, it is also expensive.
A total of 486 compatriots were checked on their way home from shopping in the Czech Republic. The researchers found 125 pyrotechnic objects with a total weight of 215 kilos. The weight of the net explosive mass also speaks volumes: a terrifying 43 kilos. 27 smugglers were reported. Such smuggling trips to the shooting and firecracker paradise of the Czech Republic are quite risky. If the police get a hit during one of their spot checks, you will have to pay a lot, depending on the amount. The fine margin: maximum 3,600 euros.
But why can’t we just import the Vietnamese standler’s rockets and firecrackers? “In Austria, the use of fireworks in categories F3 and F4 is reserved for people who have received an official permit,” explains district inspector Markus Kreilmeier, an explosives expert with the state police.
“In an explosion, it’s not just a few fingers that are gone.”
Kreilmeier also had for demonstration purposes a particularly dangerous fireworks display called “Super Size”, which was seized last year: “This cylinder contains 200 grams of net explosive. If it explodes, not a blade of grass will be left within a radius of one and a half meters. Then it’s not just a few fingers or a hand that are gone, but everything is gone.” Only in Vienna was a firecracker taken out of circulation, which was even worse, with a load of 350 grams of explosives. “Such a firework As an expert, you light it with your own ignition system. If you don’t know what you are doing, just use a lighter. Then you add alcohol on New Year’s Eve as a boost and the sparks will fly,” says Kreilmeier.
