Before the National Council elections in September, fake election posters from the FPÖ, ÖVP and Neos caused a stir in Graz. As is now known, a search also took place at the homes of left-wing activists.
On September 11, 2024, there was great excitement throughout Austria: when the residents of Graz were waiting for the trams in the morning, they immediately noticed fake election posters from the FPÖ, ÖVP and Neos.
This included children in a black and white photo raising their hands in the “Hitler salute”, a banner with swastikas reading “Remigration now!”, the FPÖ logo and “No new ideas are needed – Kickl, your choice The party responded, calling the posters an “antidemocratic and incendiary campaign, likely originating from left-wing extremist circles.”
Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) was depicted with a turquoise crucible in his hands, opposite the Austrofascist dictator Engelbert Dollfuß.
The Ankünder company, whose advertising space for the campaign was misused, filed a complaint at the time. “It is beyond me that someone would clearly take money and then never make the purpose of the campaign public,” said Managing Director Dieter Weber. The company turned the posters over to the police and has not heard anything since.
Search in the left area
A few days ago, the ‘anarchist group’ – as they call themselves – Infoladen Graz wrote on Instagram that a search had taken place in a shared apartment in Graz on September 23. A spokesperson for the Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office also confirmed this to the “Krone”.
Sightings by a witness and a ‘blurred image’ led to a shared apartment between a ‘known activist’ – as Infoladen writes – and an HTL student. Police seized cellphones, laptops and other data media from the apartment. Just a week later the devices were returned. The Public Prosecution Service also confirms that they were unable to prove anything to anyone through the search.
The investigation is now continuing but no further information is available. Investigations are being conducted into theft, but especially into property damage and slander.
