The charges against a Syrian who was discovered and “liberated” by a team of American reporters during a report in a secret prison have been confirmed. Adel Gharbal, or Salama Mohammad Salama, as his real name is, is not a political prisoner of the overthrown Assad regime. The news channel CNN has now admitted to having been deceived.
Syrian fact-checking platform Verify-Sy was not the only one to point out false information in a post on its website and in comments among Numerous residents of Homs province, where Salama lives, contacted CNN saying they knew him as an intelligence officer of the air force.
Numerous accusations were also made against the man: he allegedly blackmailed, stole, abused and even murdered citizens. One of these informants even handed over a photo that showed Salama in uniform, according to CNN. According to its own statements, the broadcaster did not want to publish the recording to protect the informant or his family members.
The “liberated” prisoner has disappeared
In any case, the prisoner’s identity could be verified using facial recognition software. However, CNN has not yet been able to clarify why he was behind bars. Veteran war correspondent Clarissa Ward has now relabeled her video on the short messaging platform X and corrected the information about the “liberated” prisoner (see above). But that’s not enough for many viewers; they also want an apology from the TV channel. Some people are also demanding that those responsible now “roll their heads.” Meanwhile, Salama’s whereabouts are unknown.
