Congress repeals the energy tax

Date:

PNV and Junts have supported a PP amendment to the government’s tax reform, which would repeal the special tax on energy companies.

This Thursday, the plenary meeting of the Congress of Deputies approved by an absolute majority the repeal of the article of law on which the temporary tax on energy companies, which has been extended since 2023, is based.

This is an amendment to the tax reform that the PP introduced with its absolute majority in the Senate and which has now been ratified in Congress with the support of Junts and the PNV, who no longer want to extend the tax.

In concrete terms, the measure establishes the repeal of the article regulating the rate in the law which created temporary taxes on energy and credit institutions and financial and credit institutions and which created the temporary solidarity tax on large fortunes.

Both the PNV spokesperson, Aitor Esteban, and the Junts spokesperson, Miriam Nogueras, confirmed in the halls of Congress that their parties do not support this tax figure because it could jeopardize investments in the energy industry and, in the case of the Basques, because their current configuration of non-tax benefits prevents provincial treasuries from collecting them.

The withdrawal would prevent it from fulfilling its promise to ERC, Bildu and BNG to extend the tax, but the government plans to take advantage of the Council of Ministers next Monday, the last of the year, to pass the promised legislative decree so that it will come into effect sooner that the reform voted on Thursday will be published in the Government Gazette (BOE) and its legal basis will be deleted.
