New elections coming up – commission votes to dissolve parliament in Israel

Date:

In an important step towards new elections, members of the Israeli parliament voted to dissolve them. Members of the parliamentary committee voted in favor of a corresponding law on Tuesday evening. The first reading in the plenary will take place on Tuesday. The fifth general election is coming up in less than four years. These should follow the bill in late October or early November.

The law on the dissolution of parliament is due to enter into force on Wednesday at midnight. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will then hand over the position of head of government to former Foreign Minister Yair Lapid.

Increased party funding
On Monday evening, the Knesset also called new elections elsewhere. MPs from the coalition and opposition agreed to increase party funding by about 30 million shekels (about 8.3 million euros), as the Times of Israel reports.

coalition can no longer be cemented
Bennett and Lapid announced last week that they had exhausted all efforts to stabilize their eight-party coalition. Among other things, a vote to extend a law that would give settlers in the occupied West Bank the same rights as citizens in the rest of Israeli territory had sparked controversy.

In June 2021, right-wing hardliner Bennett and Lapid of the liberal party Yesh Atid agreed on the historic coalition government, whose members come from all political camps and which included an Arab party for the first time in Israel’s history. Most importantly, they shared a desire to replace long-term Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had previously been in power for 12 years.
