For the first time, a wounded North Korean soldier was captured by Ukrainian forces; corresponding Ukrainian media reports have now been confirmed by South Korean intelligence. The arrest took place in the Kursk region.
“Through real-time information sharing with an allied country’s intelligence agency, it was confirmed that an injured North Korean soldier had been captured,” South Korean intelligence said.
The soldier’s condition is uncertain
An alleged image of the soldier, shared on Ukrainian social media channels, shows an emaciated, injured man – details of his medical condition are unclear.
A photo of the suspected arrested soldier circulated on social media:
The North Korean is said to have been arrested by special forces in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine has captured and occupied territory in an offensive. It has not been announced exactly when the arrest took place. There has been no confirmation of the incident so far, either from the North Korean or Ukrainian side.
More than 10,000 North Koreans in Russia
It would be the first case in which a North Korean soldier has been arrested since the isolated country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, provided about 10,000 fighters to Russia. Moscow and Pyongyang had previously signed a defense pact in which both countries pledged to come to each other’s aid in the event of an attack.
