Brazilian authorities have identified more than 150 Chinese workers at a construction site of Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD in Bahia state as victims of human trafficking. The 163 workers were discovered on the grounds of a Chinese company factory, authorities said.
However, BYD (Build Your Dreams) and the Jinjiang Group, which was responsible for the construction, contradicted each other: it was not human trafficking.
The workers were housed in hotels
Both companies have agreed to house the workers in hotels until negotiations to terminate their contracts are completed. BYD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Jinjiang could not be reached outside normal business hours.
BYD has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electric vehicles and also produces batteries, electronic components and solar systems. At the end of 2023, the company announced the construction of its first European car factory in Hungary. In addition to China, BYD currently has branches in the US, Brazil, Japan and India.
