Trapped – Top Russian officers killed in HIMARS attack

Date:

Three senior Russian officers are said to have been killed in a Ukrainian attack using the HIMARS missile launcher system and drones. Ukrainian military intelligence released a video showing the attack in the occupied territory of Zaporizhia Oblast. Russian military bloggers reported that the dead had been lured into a trap.

The intelligence service says it received information about a planned meeting of officers and subsequently developed an attack plan together with the Unmanned Systems Force and the security service.

This video of the attack was shared by the Ukrainian army on social media:

Attack drones are also deployed
It was a “highly accurate HIMARS attack” on the officers and their vehicles; drones later targeted an evacuation group. The three Russian officers killed in the attack were Captain Nagorny Dmitry Olegovich, commander of the 1st battalion of the 135th Motorized Rifle Regiment, Captain Krokhmalov Grigory Aleksandrovich, deputy chief of staff for reconnaissance of the 135th Motorized Rifle Regiment, and Captain Fomin Yuri Viktorovich, commander of the 4th Anti-Aircraft Battery Guards military base.

Military bloggers suspect that the Russian officers were lured to the location where the attack took place under the pretext of delivering humanitarian aid. “A Russian military blogger claimed that the Ukrainian armed forces knew the personal information of officers, including those they communicated with, their friends and those who had previously provided humanitarian aid,” the Institute for War Studies (ISW) said.

Moscow thwarted a bomb attack on another officer
As Russia’s domestic secret service FSB reported, the assassination of another senior Russian officer and a pro-Russian military blogger was foiled. The two were allegedly killed by a bomb hidden in a portable speaker.
