On Friday morning, an 83-year-old fell down a flight of stairs in a private hut in Weitental. Fortunately, three comrades from the Klagenfurt mountain rescue team were on a skiing holiday on the Turrach. The “Krone” spoke to the head of the Klagenfurt mountain rescue service, Kurt Müller, who was himself in action.
“We were woken up from our deep sleep – of course you are sleeping at this time,” says Kurt Müller about that night’s mission. At 4:46 a.m., the Klagenfurt mountain rescue service received information that an 83-year-old lady had fallen down a flight of stairs in Weitental (Turracherhöhe) and seriously injured her hip area.
Use with a member of the elevator company
“I have been coming to the Turrach for a while, we have a hut here and that is why I always come here on holiday during the Christmas holidays. The Weitental is part of the rescue area in the Klagenfurt mountains and that is why we were assigned this mission,” reports Müller, who immediately started calling two other comrades. Together with a member of the lift company, who also works at the Radenthein mountain rescue service, the four helpers were able to find their way to the accident site.
“Without Skidoo the operation would have been very difficult”
“I also do the pister rescue service on the Turrach. “We have specially equipped a skidoo with a stretcher,” Müller is happy with this vehicle, because without the skidoo the operation would not have been so easy. Despite the hut’s relatively remote location, mountain rescuers were on site within a very short time to help the injured lady. They were able to rescue the 83-year-old with the help of a barn basket stretcher and take her to the pre-ordered ambulance from Johanitter Accident Assistance in Patergassen.
Severe femoral neck fracture
“Because of the severe pain, we feared a fracture of the femoral neck, which later turned out to be true,” says Müller. The patient was transported to the Alpin 1 rescue helicopter in Patergassen. “Because it was brighter, the helicopter was able to fly and so she was taken to the hospital in Klagenfurt where she underwent surgery.”
“We would like to thank everyone involved for their professional cooperation and wish the patient a speedy recovery,” says the mountain rescue service, satisfied with the successful and quick operation.
