Anyone who does something like that obviously doesn’t care about the fate of his fellow human beings. Because unknown people stole important signposts on the Naturfreundesteig to Traunstein. Precisely on that mountain where fatalities occur regularly anyway. Such reckless actions place other hikers and mountain climbers at unnecessary risk of getting lost and possibly falling.
The Naturfreundesteig is considered the most popular and beautiful path to the 1,691 meter high Traunstein. Path number 414 leads from the shore of the Traunsee over the southwestern slope up to the Traunsteinhaus.
This year, in May, the old sheet steel signposts on this path were replaced by new ones made of plastic. But these apparently now arouse unexpected desires, because two of the signs have now been stolen.
Danger of taking a wrong turn
“Something like this is really not a trivial violation, but it puts people at risk,” says route manager Martin Schimpl of the Naturfreunde Gmunden. Ultimately, the purpose of the signs is to show mountain hikers the right way and not to hang in a cellar as a souvenir or trophy.
“If they are suddenly no longer there, there is a great risk, especially in fog, that someone will take a wrong turn, get lost and end up in life-threatening terrain.”
Calling thieves
The 51-year-old therefore urges the thieves to reconsider their actions and bring back the signposts: “There is money and a lot of volunteer work behind putting them up.”
The perpetrators probably used a crowbar. “Because we secured the signs extra well with four impact plugs.”
If thieves are caught red-handed, they are guaranteed to be reported.
