He was the oldest survivor of the Japanese attack on the American base at Pearl Harbor in World War II: now former radio operator Warren “Red” Upton has died at the age of 105.
After a short stay in the hospital, he died with his family on Christmas Day, the Pacific Historic Parks organization reported on Facebook.
According to the release, Upton served on the battleship USS Utah. When it was hit by two torpedoes and began to capsize, he and other comrades were able to escape by swimming to Ford Island in the bay. 58 crew members died.
Only 15 other known survivors
After the war, Upton returned home and started a family. His wife Gene died in 2018. Upton was the last survivor of the USS Utah crew.
According to the American military newspaper Stars an Stripes, only fifteen other survivors are known from the attack, which killed 2,335 American soldiers.
On December 7, 1941, Japanese air forces attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet, anchored at Pearl Harbor Naval Base south of Honolulu, Hawaii. The next day, the previously neutral US declared war on the Japanese Empire.
