US First Lady Jill Biden and Queen Letizia of Spain visited a shelter for refugees from Ukraine in Madrid on Tuesday. The two had conversations with some displaced persons. The center in Pozuelo de Alarcón, on the outskirts of Madrid, is one of four reception centers in Spain.
The wife of US President Joe Biden arrived in Madrid on Sunday evening. Biden himself was expected on Tuesday afternoon at the NATO summit on Wednesday and Thursday in the Spanish capital. He came from the G7 summit in Bavaria.
124,000 Ukrainians admitted
According to official figures, Spain has so far granted temporary protection under EU rules to 124,000 Ukrainians. The statute guarantees people important rights such as a work permit, access to medical care, housing and social benefits for a period of one to three years.
Visited Cancer Society
The day before, the First Lady and Queen had visited the headquarters of the Spanish Cancer Society AECC in Madrid. Jill Biden is committed to the fight against cancer and is the founder of the breast cancer foundation Biden Breast Health.
