At least three foreign tourists have died in a fire at a hotel near the famous Khaosan Road in the Thai capital Bangkok. It is still unclear where the victims come from.
Seven other holidaymakers, including two Germans, were injured, Khaosod newspaper reported, citing police. Most are said to have suffered smoke inhalation.
Guests fled to the roof
The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the six-story Ember Hotel on Sunday evening. In total there would have been approximately 75 guests in the hotel. Dozens escaped to the roof of the building. They were brought to safety by emergency services using turntable ladders. After about an hour, the fire brigade was able to bring the flames under control at around 10:30 PM local time.
Investigators gathered witness statements Monday to determine the cause of the fire. The Ember Hotel is just a few minutes from the backpacker mile Khaosan Road and has good reviews on booking portals. The lively street in the old Banglamphu district is famous among people from all over the world for its lavish New Year’s Eve celebrations.
