Spectacular scenes occurred on Monday evening in the neighboring town of Staad on Lake Constance (Switzerland). A 66-year-old involuntarily parked on the tracks and fled.
At around 9:30 p.m., the driver of the car left the road at the Mosti railway crossing, crashed into several posts and crashed through a fence. The car then remained on the track. The uninjured 66-year-old fled the scene of the accident to the lakeshore.
But the perpetrator did not get far: a patrol of the St. Gallen cantonal police found the man a short time later at the foot of a staircase in the lake, thanks to information from several witnesses who had followed him.
Because the motorist was deemed unfit to drive, a blood and urine sample was ordered. The man’s foreign driver’s license for Switzerland was revoked.
Railway closed
The vehicle was a total loss. The extent of the material damage to the rail infrastructure is still being determined. Train traffic was interrupted until shortly before 11 p.m.
Several patrols from the St. Gallen cantonal police, the SBB intervention and the rescue service were in action. In addition, the environmental damage department of the canton of St. Gallen was alerted due to the leakage of operating fluids. Possible environmental impacts are still being elucidated.
