Power cable failure – photos of suspected oil tanker published

Date:

On Christmas Day, the Estlink 2 power cable was damaged in the Baltic Sea. Now police have published photos of the hull of a suspected oil tanker. Damage to the “Eagle S” can be seen in the underwater photos.

These marks could be further evidence that the damage to the power cable was caused by the ship’s anchor. Corresponding drag marks were discovered in detail on the seabed (see video above). Police in Finland published the photos. The “Eagle S” is currently anchored east of Helsinki.

As reported, the power cable between Finland and Estonia was damaged on Christmas Day. Finnish authorities suspect sabotage and have arrested the freighter ‘Eagle S’, which according to the EU belongs to the Russian shadow fleet and sails under the flag of the Cook Islands.

Crew questioned
According to police, the investigation is still ongoing. The oil tanker’s crew was interrogated on Monday and was cooperating, it was said. The police want to get as complete a picture as possible of what happened on board. It is suspected that there has been material damage and serious disruption of the communication structure.

The researchers are currently evaluating devices with data on the ship’s course, but the underwater survey was paused due to difficult weather conditions. As the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported, a lawyer has been appointed to request the ship’s release in court. The tanker may be detained until any deficiencies are resolved.

The incident occurred about a month after two telecommunications cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea. In this case, a Chinese cargo ship came under suspicion. NATO has announced that it will increase its presence in the Baltic Sea to better protect critical infrastructure.
